Hawktimus Prime runs on mentors. Every robot we've built, every award we've won, every kid who's figured out how to wire a motor controller or write their first line of Java, that all happened because someone showed up and shared what they know.
You don't need a robotics background to make a difference here. We need engineers and machinists, but also people who can manage a budget, run a fundraiser, take good photos, or just keep 30+ teenagers organized during a build session. If you've got a skill, there's a place for it on this team.
It's also just a good time. You get to watch students go from "I have no idea what I'm doing" to leading their own subteam over the course of a season. That's the payoff.
Mentors support the team across four subteams, plus general team operations:
Design – 3D CAD modeling in OnShape, working through design iterations with students before anything gets built
Build – Fabrication, tools, CNC work, mechanical and electrical assembly
Software – Robot code in Java using WPILib, helping students turn design intent into working control code
Business – Fundraising, sponsorships, grants, outreach, and managing our online presence
Beyond the subteams, we always need help with event logistics, chaperoning, driving to competitions, and outreach events like STEM nights and community festivals.
Your time commitment is flexible. Some mentors are at every meeting; others show up when they can. Any time you can give is time we'll put to good use.
To mentor with Hawktimus Prime, you'll need to:
Register as a FIRST Mentor. This is required for safety and liability and applies to every mentor on the team. This involves a mandatory background check performed by First.
Training First Requires you do the Mentor Ready Training path at their website.
Register as a Wake County Volunteer. Since we're based out of Holly Springs High School, all mentors working with students on campus need to be approved through Wake County Public School System.
Fill out the mentor application.
Complete FIRST mentor registration using the link we send you after your application.
Register as a Wake County Volunteer through the WCPSS site, then send a screenshot of your approved profile to coaches@hawktimusprime.com.
Join our Band group so you're in the loop on meetings and events.
Attend a mentor orientation (we'll reach out to schedule one once your registrations are in).
